Kidney Stone Treatment: Various Medical Options To Remove Kidney Stones
If you have ever suffered having a kidney stone, you know how painful it can be and typically, the kidney stone treatment that the urologist will choose will normally be the least invasive, based upon the size of the stone.
Sadly, nearly all of the treatments to remove the stones are not any more pleasant than the stones themselves are. If your stone is small and the doctor feels it will pass by on its own, he may recommend pain killers, advise you to rest and take in a lot of fluids. You will know if you are drinking enough water by the color of your pee. When it is clear, that is a sign that you are drinking adequately. Usually, kidney stones are small enough to be passed this way.
For stones that cannot pass on their own, the least invasive kidney stone treatment is known as lithotripsy. This procedure is done while the patient is under a light anesthesia, usually known as a twilight sleep. The process consists of shock waves which pass through the body and split up the kidney stone. The patient is then sent back home to rest, drink plenty of fluids and pass the stone fragments naturally though their urinary tract.
Another type of kidney stone treatment that may be used is known as ureteroscopy. For this, the surgeon will pass a tube known as ureteroscope up through the urinary tract in which he will then use instruments to break the stone so that it can easily be removed. This is typically used when the stones have gone out of the kidney and into the ureter.
A process known as a PCNL, or percutaneous nephrolithotomy, is one kidney stone treatment that is more invasive. The surgeon may perform this procedure for larger kidney stones. With this procedure, the surgeon creates a cut in the patient's back and then injects a thin telescope into the kidney. The surgeon will then break the stone up and take it away. This procedure is used in cases of very large stones or in the event that the lithotripsy does not work.
Although rarely used, in some cases the surgeon also can make a cut in the side in order that he can reach the kidneys. This enables him to easily remove the stone. Such kidney stone treatment is scarcely needed.
It is not uncommon for a person that has formed a kidney stone and has had a kidney stone treatment to form more stones in the future. About fifty percent of the people that have a kidney stone will develop a new one within 5 years unless measures are taken to avoid them. This could simply be by drinking much more fluids or taking prescriptions that help your prevent your body from forming new stones.
Suffering with kidney stones can be a painful experience. Kidney stone remedies can vary from a simple round of pain meds and extra fluids to more invasive solutions and long healing times. It does not matter which kidney stone treatment is chosen, working closely with your urologist will be a great course of action.
