Careless And Abusive Drinking Leads To Mental Health Issues And Depression, An Enabling Wife, And Motivation For Affirmative Change
It took many years but Sarah eventually made up her mind that she had it with her husband's abusive and unhealthy drinking. She was tired of seeing Keith come home after 1:00 AM from drinking rather than spending quality time with her and their son and daughter. She was also sick and tired of the second DWI Keith recently got. In addition she was worn-out from making excuses for Keith when he couldn't make it to the office due to his excessive and hazardous drinking.
In a similar manner, she was apprehensive about the fact that their relationship was going downhill due to Keith's unhealthy and excessive drinking. And lastly she was tired of the perilous financial dilemma into which he had placed his family due to his excessive and abusive drinking behavior.
One Friday afternoon when Sarah was pondering what she could do about her husband's unhealthy and excessive drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something to cut into the harmful cycle of Keith's careless and abusive drinking behavior. So Sarah looked in the yellow pages under "alcohol rehab" and discovered several rehabilitation facilities that were all located less than ten miles away from where she and Keith resided.
When Sarah called each rehabilitation facility she introduced herself and stated that Keith, her husband, was exhibiting unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior. She also articulated that her husband had a quality health insurance program at his job and that inpatient or outpatient alcoholism treatment would be covered if a health care professional in the company health network initiated the rehab.
After listening to Sarah discuss her husband's careless and excessive drinking, the physician in an encouraging but firm way told Sarah how she more likely than not played a role in her spouse's abusive drinking through the months and the years. How? Basically by justifying his behavior rather than letting him go through the results of his unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior.
Stated more forcefully, the therapist stated to Sarah that she may have been inadvertently enabling Keith's abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior. The psychologist also underlined the point that Sarah would not be able to control Keith's behavior. With the guidance and support of the rehabilitation team at the rehab clinic, conversely, she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Keith's unhealthy and excessive drinking but she would also be able to learn how to help him schedule an appointment at the treatment facility so that he could go over his abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior with a psychologist.
The good news was that after Sarah mentioned this to Keith and he saw that she meant business, he told her that he had been quite concerned about his careless and excessive drinking behavior and that he was very comforted to know that Sarah wanted to do something constructive about his unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior. Consequently, he scheduled an appointment to see a doctor at the local alcohol treatment center.
While simply calling a rehabilitation program does not guarantee that a person's unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior will become less problematic or that an individual will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, making an appointment is unmistakably an indispensable component in the rehab process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting rehab for his excessive and careless drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the probability for a successful recovery was considerably increased.
