A Young Male Requires Treatment For His Intense Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Alcohol Dependency And Drug Addiction

Around three months ago I had lunch with a forty-three-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences severe depression, has relationship issues, and who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. As mentioned by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug dependency and his intense depression that has had the most to do with his recurring relationship issues.

As articulated by Benjamin, he is so overwhelmed by his relationship issues and by both of his medical conditions that he in actual fact has no impetus to complete much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to complete three semesters of graduate school in law.

Benjamin's condition makes me question if he is an example of an individual who can look within and perceive his drinking problems and substance abuse and do something constructive about these problems. Or, to the contrary, if he is someone who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol dependency rehab that results in long lasting recovery.

It may be asked how counseling would help his alcohol and drug addiction. First of all, there are some recently produced doctor-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse, help him through the alcohol and drug detox process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in rehabilitation he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is utterly nothing positive about drug addiction and unhealthy and excessive drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the map to shattered relationships, a premature death, legal problems, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, and poor work and school performance. Fourth, counseling for his relationship problems and his depression might help him deal with these psychological difficulties more successfully and possibly create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in rehab he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has exhibited.

Since Benjamin doesn't have the ambition to achieve much of anything in his life, it is clear that he badly needs a little hope for a more fulfilling life. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the treatment he requires for his acute depression and alcoholism and drug addiction and stay with his treatment routine.

Benjamin is simply too young to be overwhelmed in life. He doesn't understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to remove himself from drugs and alcohol through drug and alcohol therapy and get the counseling he needs for his acute depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with passion, direction, and with self-respect.

More solid relationships, positive change, self esteem, and a meaningful life are certainly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become motivated to seek the medical rehab he needs, follow through with his therapy protocol, live his life in a healthy and drug and alcohol-free way, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his existence.
