Frank and Linda have been dating for five years. They met while taking the same social work class at a relatively large, country, liberal arts college located in the Southern part of the United States. While they were in essence good friends at first, they finally started to date when they were in their third year of college.
Because both of them came from very old-fashioned backgrounds, neither one of them drank very much beyond the experimental stage when they first began dating. As the time advanced, however, they started to go to more happy hours, sorority and fraternity parties, keg parties, and football bashes. Consequently, they progressively began to drink increasingly more as they progressed in their relationship.
After they graduated, they both landed jobs in a relatively large city located roughly fifty miles from their undergraduate college. Then they at long last made up their mind to move into the same apartment together.

For Linda and Frank the idea of buying a new house and having children was this "method of change." All of these inquiries undoubtedly led to the same conclusion, namely that Frank and Linda needed to understand that they couldn't maintain their heavy drinking if their hopes, dreams, and plans were to be completed.
Once they settled upon this conclusion, they advised their drinking friends about their their plans to start a family, about their marital plans, and about their goal of buying or building a new house. They also told their drinking pals that they still wanted to associate with them but that they would be drinking responsibly from this point forward so that they could begin realizing their future hopes, dreams, and plans.
Much to their astonishment, all of their pals expressed relief because they too had been reappraising their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too often focused on drinking. They also felt that they would have to change extensively if they were to become more responsible and manifest more respect for their health, their careers, and for their aspirations in the next fifteen or twenty years.
After their candid discussion with their pals about their aspirations, hopes, and dreams, Linda and Frank in reality started to have more meaningful relationships with all of their buddies. The fundamental reason for this was the fact that all of them had the same way of thinking regarding their irresponsible and abusive drinking and their short and long-term aspirations, plans, and goals.
